Did you know that one of the main visible signs of facial aging can be traced back to volume loss?  As your facial tissues thin out with age, lines become more etched around the nose and mouth, often causing the cheeks to have a ‘hollowed out’ look.   This is where medically administered dermal fillers can help.  Dermal fillers can replace that lost volume to smooth wrinkles, plump your lips, fill in hollow cheeks and generally restore a more youthful appearance.

An increasingly common procedure for both women and men at YOUTH MediSpa, dermal fillers are medical-grade, gel-like substances that are injected beneath the skin to restore lost volume, smooth out lines or enhance facial contours like the jawline and cheekbones.   This procedure has gained much popularity in the past few years at is a relatively painless, non-surgical procedure with no downtime and immediate results.

Collagen used to be the preferred facial injectable for these types of treatments, but modern technological advances in fillers have resulted in improved formulations that provide impressive results with few side effects.  The results are immediate and typically last anywhere from 12 to 18 months depending on where the fillers are injected.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is the most common dermal filler used today and is a naturally occurring substance already produced in our body. It naturally keeps your skin plump and hydrated, with a youthful appearance.  HA fillers are gel-like and injected to the area of your face by a trained medical professional with immediate results that can last up to 12 months. Most HA fillers also contain lidocaine (the same freezing agent dentists use) to minimize the discomfort of the injections during and after treatment. Common, Health Canada approved brands of HA include Juvederm, Restylane and VOLUMA, amongst many others.

As with any Medical spa regime you chose for yourself, select a provider for HA injections that is knowledgeable in the treatment as non-surgical procedures like these to require specific training and years of experience to yield the best results. A knowledgeable and skilled injector working under the supervision of a Medical Doctor is critical to achieving a well-balanced result with the upmost of facial symmetry.   Ask your practitioner for recent before and after photos of patients that have been treated and be comfortable with the practitioner and his or her results.

Injectable dermal filler treatments are performed quickly and painlessly and take between 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the area(s) being filled and the volume of filler being administered. The results are immediately visible, with very little if any downtime.  Some patients do experience minimal post-treatment bruising and if so, it usually peaks within the first 24 hours and has dissipated no later than 5 days after treatment. If the patient is prone to bruising, the HA provider will recommend a course of treatment that will both minimize bruising and speed its recovery.  Patients can resume normal activity, including physical activity the day after treatments.

In conclusion, Dermal Fillers are a common and very effective treatment that can be added to most people’s anti-ageing regimens.  When administered by an experienced practitioner, the results are safe and immediate and will leave you looking younger, fresher and more vibrant.  A new YOU(th).
